Educational philosophy

Rose Senior says:

"I am passionately committed to quality language teaching. I hope to be able to use my research and teaching experience to help language teachers around the world to improve the quality of their teaching. I do not claim to have all the answers. However, I believe that through my writing, presentations, seminars and workshops I can stimulate teachers and teacher educators to think creatively about ways in which classroom language teaching and learning can become a more dynamic, engaging and satisfying endeavour."

"I consider that excellent teaching occurs wherever there are committed teachers and that the principles of good teaching are universal. I believe that the socio-pedagogic theory of classroom practice that has emerged from my work may be a useful means of integrating the diverse principles that govern effective classroom teaching."

"I believe that change can only come about when endorsed and supported from above, and embraced on a personal level by classroom practitioners. I believe that syllabuses, teaching approaches, techniques and strategies can never remain static but must constantly evolve and develop."

"I do not believe that teaching approaches can ever be directly transposed from one educational context to another. This is partly because teaching and learning conditions vary enormously from one situation to the next, and partly because of the strength and persistence of societal influences. However, I believe that teaching approaches can be adapted and modified to suit local conditions."

"I believe that teaching deserves to be universally regarded as a profession. However, I think that teaching is only worthy of this label if classroom practitioners behave in professional ways. For me this means being committed to ongoing self-development and change. It means being prepared to experiment - rather than relying solely on the dictates of others. It means being determined to do things a little differently each time around – and to critically evaluate one's own performance in an ongoing way."
